In the Japanese film "In The Fog" from 1959, a man is waking up from a nap in his small, sparsely furnished apartment post-World War II. When he comes back to life, he finds himself able to see crows. Where did they come from? Where did the man sleep before the crows appeared? Those are just some of the mysteries that will be revealed in this prequel to Hiromasa Yonebayashi's "When Marnie Was There". In 2016, when writer/director Tony Kiyama saw an early screening of “In The Fog” with its extraordinary visuals and unforgettable Crow Girl character, he became determined to create a feature length adaptation. With the collaboration of Toho and Miramax, who have been behind some of the most beloved '50s/'60s Japanese monster movies, the project is now a reality. In a land that dates back to ancient times, monsters known as kappa dwell in isolated villages and mountain villages. In these places, they guard the entrances to underground rivers and hide from humans. They live as humans do with families and wives. Then one day an earthquake caused by big change disrupts their lives as they had been living for centuries before. The story’s protagonist is Eiko Nizuma (Kikuko Inoue), who works at the local Kendo Shop. She also lives with her husband and two children as the leader of the local kappa community. Her name as kappa is Eiko, but as a human, her name is Nizuma. The husband who has been taking care of the family for years happens to be Eiko’s uncle and an expert on kappa. After the earthquake, his job is now to guide and protect Eiko and her family from danger and to raise their children among humans. Nizuma has never known what it means to be lonely or even afraid until she meets “Crow Girl” (Ayami Nakajo) at school. When Crow Girl turns to Nizuma, she is able to look at the world in a new way. With help from Crow Girl, Nizuma discovers what it means to love this earth and life again. The film also stars Hikaru Aso as Eiko’s husband, Yoshio Harada as Crow Girl’s father, Hiroki Narimiya as the kappa known as “Fuuchu Kurama” (fly-bear), Hidetoshi Nishijima as “Dainagon Yugara” (water mountain), and Fumi Nikaidō as “Karakumo Mairika” (crow woman). Yoshinori Okada plays the role of the kappa known as “Eiko Nizuma”, Kikuko Inoue plays the role of the kappa known as “Nizuma Eiko” (Eiko Nizuma). The film was produced by Toho Company Ltd., Miramax Films, Studio Ponoc, and Tezuka Productions. The film was distributed theatrically in Japan by Toho under their "Toho Champion title", and was released on September 9, 2018 alongside "Gintama 2". The film was released in select theaters in North America under its original name "Karakuri" on October 11th, 2018. cfa1e77820
