Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a 2004 American science-fiction romantic thriller film written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry. The film stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, with Mark Ruffalo, Tom Wilkinson, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, and Tom Hanks in supporting roles. In 2003 during a break from a Hollywood party that she had been invited to by her ex-boyfriend Joel Barish who still has feelings for her despite their break up earlier that year, Clementine Kruczynski meets through an online dating service Joel's psychiatrist Dr. Michael Cuza who introduces her to his latest patient whose name is erased to protect his identity. Joel and Clementine soon start dating and eventually live together. Joel, however, is devastated when he finds out that Clementine has undergone a procedure to erase him from her memory. He decides to do the same and asks Dr. Cuza's assistant Patrick for the name of the clinic and drives there with a can of gasoline and parts found in Dr. Cuza's trash cans. The film flashes back several months before this incident. The story is told from Joel's perspective. He is a struggling, financially limited filmmaker working on a romantic comedy with his new girlfriend Clementine, who has recently broken up with a man named David. They have been living together for a few months and he is planning to propose to Clementine. He visits Dr. Cuza at his home for advice on the script and starts talking about Clementine's recent interest in writing her own script. Dr. Cuza reveals that he has written many scripts but Joel seems uninterested in them, much to the doctor's dismay as he feels that these are his true passions. At the same time, Joel is having certain troubles with Clementine as she is now interested in becoming a mainstream actress and has been ignoring his script. He intends to use a break-up phrase he saw in a film named "Written on the Wind" which he had used on his previous relationship. Joel then has a session with Dr. Michael Cuza about how much upset David's departure has caused Clementine and he tells him about it as Dr. Cuza also seems upset at the loss of his wife Nicole who left him because of his constant obsession with memory erasure techniques, which she feels will not provide true happiness or closure without closure from their exes. Meanwhile, Clementine has accepted an invitation to attend a party hosted by her idol Juliette Binoche at the Grand Hyatt in New York City. She arrives late for the party due to traffic and is spotted by Joel who spots her in the crowd. Joel follows her to Dr. Cuza's house but cannot enter, so he waits in his car outside. He discovers Clementine speaking on the phone with Michael Cuza's assistant Patrick when she mentions "a spot".
